What is Metal Hero?

The Metal Hero Series (メタルヒーローシリーズ, Metaru Hīrō Series) is a metaseries of tokusatsu superhero TV series produced by Toei for Japanese television. The protagonists of the Metal Hero Series are mainly space, military and police-based characters who are typically either androids, cyborgs, or human beings who don “metallic”[clarification needed] armored suits. Henceforth, most of the Metal Heroes are also referenced as another example of the “Henshin (transforming) Heroes” genre. Usually, the genre revolves around a technological theme where technology, in the right hands, can be used for the greater good. — Wikipedia

Metal Hero is a subgenre of Tokusatsu television shows from Japan that began in the 1980s. The series typically feature a hero who wears a metallic suit and uses advanced technology to battle evil.

The first Metal Hero series, Space Sheriff Gavan, aired in 1982 and was followed by a number of other shows, including Space Sheriff Sharivan and Space Sheriff Shaider. These early Metal Hero shows were notable for their use of futuristic technology and their focus on action and adventure.

In the late 1980s and early 1990s, the Metal Hero genre expanded to include shows with more diverse themes, such as the police drama Special Rescue Exceedraft and the sci-fi western B-Fighter Kabuto.

Despite their popularity in Japan, Metal Hero shows were less successful in international markets than other Tokusatsu franchises like Super Sentai and Kamen Rider. However, the Metal Hero genre has continued to influence Japanese pop culture and has inspired numerous spin-offs and adaptations over the years.
